Minutes of Feb2008 Symposium

1. Grad funding: Better and more innovative funding for grad student research overcoming dept/college barriers. This may involve the development of an IGERT proposal which could include:
• Fellowship, GRA and travel funding for grads associated with the BLN regardless of department affiliation
• New or adapted curriculum
2. BLN interdisciplinary Graduate Minor
3. Course development, e.g.
• Intro to lang. sciences (modeled after 612- Intro to Cog Sci)-for ugrads & grads
• undergraduate course cluster

1. Diversity recruiting: Develop an innovative approach to recruiting linguistically - culturally diverse students. Direct contact with universities in regional consortium. (Kenyon, Oberlin, etc.)
2. Course coordination
1. Regular blocks of course offerings?
2. Blog about what courses to be offered, etc.?
3. Spreadsheet of projected schedule to be circulated among relevant departments
4. Planning/password protected-coordinating of courses for graduate courses.
3. Calendar of events to be posted on BLN website
4. BLN Symposium (autumn)
1. One invited speaker; one day or whole weekend?
2. Poster session for students to present
5. Resources for students on the web, e.g. Advice for students on webpage to help them navigate the various programs. Sample sequences of courses that students have done in the various programs. Have a faculty contact person from each program listed, e.g. CSE & LING: Chris Brew

• Foster greater ease of cross-disciplinary research for students and faculty
• Continue to promote events for the BLN community (such as the symposium)
• Develop courses taught by multiple faculty in different programs.

2. Development of a professional program (MA) that would focus on lang. applications:
• Important to industry
• Education (relates to lang and literacy)
• Chose one area for the MA to start and serve as a pilot for others
3. Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Language
• this would be in keeping with President Gee's wish for trans-institutional collaborations
